What are the best model portfolio websites? Models are increasingly looking for ways to keep up with the modeling industry, and that now includes jumping aboard the ‘online modeling portfolio’ train. While it still remains true that a modeling portfolio is an absolute necessity for every model, the once-strict standards have become more lenient.
Previously, if an agency-signed model were to show up to a go-see/casting call and attempt to book a job without a physical modeling portfolio in her hands – that would easily be a model without a job. Standards in the modeling industry were long-upheld and your modeling portfolio was not an ‘optional’ thing to have in your possession. Even for unsigned and freelance models, the importance of a physical modeling portfolio was indisputable. To walk in to a casting without any physical proof of your modeling capability (a modeling portfolio should showcase your range and versatility) was a waste of everybody’s time.
Times are changing, however. In this digital age, it is becoming increasingly common/acceptable to #1) have yourself (or your agent) submit you for modeling jobs/castings online, and #2) submit to the job using an online modeling portfolio. Online portfolios are a great way to not only submit to gigs- but also to be FOUND for new jobs and opportunities.
The beauty of your own personal modeling website/portfolio is that it is easily shareable, discoverable, promotable, and it just gives you that extra air of professionalism. Think about it– which would a potential client prefer to see, regardless of modeling look?
–Option #1: A model submits to their casting call online, using her Facebook page so that the client can see her photos. Her Facebook contains a few random modeling shots, photos of her overweight cats, an album of her grandmother’s 90th birthday party, and about 500 photos of her partying in college. Her recent FB posts touch on a variety of topics, from her new medical marijuana card to offensive internet memes, as well as an update on the latest drama with her boyfriend.
–Option #2: A model submits a clean, streamlined model portfolio website. Her URL is www.(her name).com. Her website contains a selection of her very best modeling photos, presented in a visually-pleasing manner. Her website also contains her modeling resume, measurements/stats, and her contact/booking info. A short but sweet biography details her hobbies, passions, and goals.
The decision is yours, of course. But ultimately, finding the best model portfolio website for yourself is likely a worthy investment. There are many sites with pre-made, beautifully designed templates where you can simply drag and drop your photos, and end up with a killer online portfolio. And of course, there are options that include hosting/building a full-on website of your own. What are the best model portfolio websites? Decide for yourself below.
Online Modeling Portfolio Websites:
(Disclosure- this post contains affiliate links. However, we don’t recommend products we don’t trust.)
The following options include web hosting:
- Pixpa – Pixpa is a great option to create an online modeling portfolio. Pixpa is a global platform for creatives. Over 25,000 models, photographers, and creative pros from all over the world use Pixpa. It is catered much more towards this industry than others, which is a big plus. Choose from 30 free themes that are easy on the eye. You can also create up to 10 pages, including a blog if you wish, which should be more than enough to get your modeling portfolio website off and running. You can set up your own portfolio with a free custom domain name for as little as $6/month.
- Wix – Just recently, supermodel Karlie Kloss created a website using Wix. With over 500 templates to choose from, Wix has more than enough to give you a modeling portfolio website you can be proud to show off. While they DO offer a free plan to build your website, you DO get what you pay for with a free plan. Zero dollars = zero custom domain name. Your URL would literally be “username.wixsite.com/sitename” – plus they would place advertisements on your site. But don’t let the free plan scare you off; this is actually a great option when you upgrade to a premium plan. Your best bet is likely ‘The Combo’ plan. This upgrades you to a legit portfolio/site, gives you a custom domain name (i.e., yourname.com), plus removes the ads on your site. The ‘Combo’ plan will run you $10/month.
This option requires that you buy your own web hosting:
- Bluehost.com + WordPress – This option is for models who want MUCH more than just a simple online modeling portfolio. This option will give you a fully-functioning website / content management system- a website that YOU own, and have total control over. This is for models who intend to “brand” themselves, or who may wish to branch out beyond modeling to other business ventures. Here’s an example: Are you a model + personal trainer? Getting your own personal website would allow you a platform to promote both at once. You can post your modeling portfolio, sell modeling prints/posters, integrate a video series of your fitness workout plans, sell your meal prep e-book, get paid to promote weight loss products through your blog, etc. You will need a hosted, dedicated website of your own to accomplish this.
(Don’t worry, we will cover the topic of getting your own ‘official model website’ in its entirety soon), but for now here’s how to get started with building your own website-
Bluehost is your web hosting, WordPress is your website/blog platform. You need to purchase web hosting through Bluehost, and then install WordPress. Once in your Bluehost dashboard, there is a 1-click installation for WordPress. Done! Without doubt, WordPress is the most widely-used tool for website building today. They have over 10,000 templates to choose from (paid and free). This option requires a bit more ‘tech know-how’ than the others, but if you can figure out Snapchat, Instagram, FB, etc – you can probably figure out WordPress too. If not, a web designer can easily help you implement your vision into a legit modeling/business website. Naturally, web designers aren’t free and neither is web hosting- but this is a small investment for those with big goals. You can get hosting from Bluehost starting at just $3.95/month.
